We invited leaders and visionaries
to join the conversation at our Speaker Series
Justin Trudeau and Larry Beasley
On the evening of November 6, 2007, the third of four Our Future Mississauga Speaker Series events was held at Hammerson Hall, Living Arts Centre. The Series is part of a larger project aimed at developing a new Strategic Direction and Plan for the City of Mississauga, as it positions itself to be a great city in the 21st Century. The objective of these events is to motivate and inspire the envisioning of our future Mississauga.
Over 1000 people were in attendance to be part of the conversation, and to hear Justin Trudeau and Larry Beasley, former Director of Planning for the City of Vancouver, discuss the opportunities available to Mississauga. Justin Trudeau discussed the importance of sustainability and community, and the need to leverage our strengths – our people, our youth, and our diversity. Using Vancouver as an example, Larry Beasley presented on the qualities of successful cities: urban structure, diversity, social mix, culture, built form, sustainability, civic governance, and the unique spirit of a place. The presentations were followed by a lively Q&A session, moderated by Suhana Meharchand, and closing comments were made by Mayor McCallion.
The evening carried forward the momentum from previous
events, and continued to build the energy surrounding
the 21st Century Conversation as the project begins
to transition from the inspirational Speaker Series
toward the visioning workshops and forum. The Speaker
Series continues to stimulate a broader dialogue,
to inspire people to ‘dream big’ about
the future of their city, and to encourage involvement
in the process that will culminate in the creation
of a new Strategic Plan for the City of Mississauga.
