Mississauga's youth express their ideas and vision for the City through a Sculptural Piece Initiative

As a result of attending the Visioning Symposium on February 22 and 23, 2008, Ms. Lisa Irvine, a Visual Arts Teacher from Applewood Heights Secondary School (located in Ward 3) initiated a conversation with representatives of the Building a City for the 21st Century Team (BC21 Team) about a Sculptural Arts Assignment for Grade 11 students to create conceptual artistic sculptures addressing one of the following eight (8) Community Engagement Themes:

1. Getting around in Mississauga;
2. Going "Green" in 905;
3. Creating wealth in our community;
4. Embracing our social diversity;
5. Positively influence our quality of life;
6. Investing in creativity and knowledge;
7. Creating a vibrant downtown; and
8. Realizing the opportunities of being part of the Golden Horseshoe.

With the support and input of the B21 Team, the sculptural assignment was promoted to Visual Art and Media teachers at Glenforest Secondary School, Iona Secondary School and St. Marcellinus and as a result, a total of four schools / five classes participated in this exercise.

The Sculptural Piece Project was created in an effort to continue engaging Mississauga's Youth in the Strategic Plan process and was assigned to Grade 11 students attending the following secondary schools and classes:

Contributing to the success of the Strategic Plan Open House was the Youth Sculptural Initiative that was on display in the Great Hall for the community to see how our youth envision the City of Mississauga in the 21st Century. A total of twenty-two (22) sculptural pieces and corresponding written submissions were selected from four participating Mississauga secondary schools and were on display during the afternoon and evening Open House Sessions. The students who created the sculptural pieces were present during the evening session to describe their inspiring sculptural artwork to the Mayor, City Manager and members of the community. Principals, teachers and family members were in attendance in support of the student's work and to hear further details about the directions of the City's New Strategic Plan.

Students were congratulated by the Mayor, Members of City Council and Bruce Carr, Director of Strategic Planning and Business Services and were recognized with a certificate and small gift of appreciation.
