When can I apply for the ActiveAssist subsidy?
Residents can apply any time during regular business hours at any Mississauga Community Centre, or at the Recreation Division Customer Service Centre.
How do I apply for this subsidy?
Residents must apply in person, and provide a completed ActiveAssist application form, proof of total family net income and proof of legal responsibility for all dependants listed on their application. Only the Documents listed on the ActiveAssist application will be accepted, and all documents must be current. Proof of residency in Mississauga may also be requested.
I don't want this subsidy; can I apply so that only my children receive it?
Yes! You will still need to submit a completed ActiveAssist application form listing all family members, and provide current eligibility documents. Any family members that do not wish to use their credit should check the OPT OUT box next to their name on the application form. By informing us that not all family members wish to receive a subsidy we can ensure that ActiveAssist will be available to another deserving family.
When and how will I know if I'm approved?
Our Customer Service Centre will process applications within 15 business days of receiving the application from the Community Centre. An acceptance letter will then be mailed to your address via Canada Post, welcoming you to the program.
How do I use my subsidy?
Your acceptance letter will include your Family PIN and Client Barcode for use on the Connect2Rec online registration website, and your Subsidy will appear as a method of payment for eligible programs when you Checkout. You may also register in person at any Mississauga Community Centre using the home telephone number listed on your application.
What if I do not use my subsidy money in one year?
Any unused credits remaining at the end of your enrolment period will automatically be removed from your account upon your expiry date. Unused credits cannot be carried over, and you will not be credited for any Withdrawals or Transfers performed after your expiry date. Credits are non-transferable, and cannot be applied to a program or membership for another individual or family member. ActiveAssist cannot be redeemed for cash.
What do I do at the end of my 12 months?
To receive another subsidy, you are responsible to reapply annually and you must continue to meet all eligibility criteria. Applications for a new subsidy may be made thirty days prior to the end of your current enrolment period, and will be eligible for processing on the day after your expiry date.
What happens once 8,500 people have applied and been approved?
Maximum enrolment in ActiveAssist is capped at 8,500 individuals at any one time. When maximum enrolment has been reached, ActiveAssist applications will be held until space becomes available, and an acceptance letter will be mailed to your address once your subsidy has been processed. Residents whose applications are held for more than twelve months will be required to reapply at a Community Centre of their choice with their most recent eligibility documentation.
ActiveAssist participants reapplying for the next year, no more than thirty days prior to the end of their enrolment period, will be eligible for a new subsidy on the day after their expiry date. If the maximum number of 8,500 ActiveAssist customers has been reached, applications will be held until space opens in the program.
How do I add a new child/family member to my ActiveAssist subsidy?
There will be no amendments to an application after a family has received their ActiveAssist funds. Families that have new family members will need to add them to their application when they reapply for ActiveAssist the following year. Family members that have previously selected OPT OUT cannot be activated during the family's enrolment period, and can only be added when the family reapplies.
What about the Jerry Love Children's Fund?
The Jerry Love Children's Fund will continue as usual. Applicants in receipt of the Jerry Love Children's Fund cannot receive benefits from the ActiveAssist fee assistance program within the same calendar year. Families that have previously benefitted from the Jerry Love Children's Fund will be advised that they will need to reapply for ActiveAssist in the following calendar year.
Why is the City offering such a program?
User fee subsidies will extend the benefits of municipal Recreation & Culture programs to an increased number of children, youth, families and older adults who live in low-income conditions and are therefore less likely to afford current user fees.
How many people in Mississauga will be able to apply for subsidy?
ActiveAssist is based on the economic need of individuals and families, measured by LICO. Enrolment in the program is capped at a maximum of 8,500 participants, who will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
What is LICO?
Statistics Canada uses the term Low Income Cut-Off or LICO. Essentially LICO is a statistical number that defines where poverty ends. It is based on where you live and the size of your family. LICO is used by most municipalities that run assistance programs like ActiveAssist.
Who can I contact for further information regarding ActiveAssist?
