Mandate

The City of Mississauga is seeking a senior IT lawyer with strong business acumen and interpersonal skills to join their legal department .
The successful candidate will be highly motivated and will provide timely and effective legal advice to the City's IT and other divisions. This will involve providing strategic legal advice on major IT procurements, drafting and negotiation of a variety of IT contracts, providing advice on intellectual property and privacy matters, and advising on any applicable new legislative and regulatory requirements.
The ability to manage competing priorities and to solve a variety of complex problems with confidence are critical elements to this role. Candidate Profile

Qualifications

  • Post-graduate university degree in law (LLB or JD) and be a member in good standing of the Ontario Bar.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive law experience in Information Technology (IT) law, with experience in drafting, negotiating, structuring and advising on various types of commercial contracts and transactions relating to all aspects of general information systems.
  • Public procurement experience and experiences in intellectual property law such as drafting agreements and providing opinions on trade-mark and copyright matters are considered definite assets.
  • Knowledge of municipal law and privacy legislation would also be viewed as assets.
  • Excellent communication skills, both orally and in writing, and demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment.
  • Must have sound judgment in providing practical legal advice in support of the City's business needs and negotiating complex agreements, often under tight deadlines.
  • Strong organizational and research skills are also required.

Key Priorities

  • Advising on commercial IT transactions and procurement processes.
  • Drafting, negotiating and reviewing a wide range of IT agreements and procurement documents.
  • Providing advice on Intellectual Property matters.
  • Providing opinion and strategic direction to City staff as they relate to IT matters.
