Shelby Park Trail

4220 Shelby Crescent, Mississauga

In September 2018, a trail through Shelby Park's restored woodlot was opened and allows residents to use the area for recreation and nature enjoyment.

Tree diseases, including Dutch elm disease and ash yellows, caused the health of the trees in Shelby Park to decline. This lead to the removal of most of the trees in the woodlot in 2007.

As a result, our Forestry team turned this tree loss into an opportunity to replant and expland the woodlot from an original 5,000 square metres (1.2 acres) to 10,000 square metres (2.5 acres). In 2008 and 2009, community tree plantings took place with over 300 volunteers from nine partner organizations, planting 3,582 native trees and shrubs. To ensure restoration success, the area was fenced while the trees and shrubs matured.

Residents are encouraged to visit Shelby Park and play a role in maintaining the health of the natural area. Residents can help protect the natural area by staying on trails to prevent the trampling of plants and using proper waste containers for litter and curbside pick-up for yard waste.

The City of Mississauga will continue to hold stewardship and restoration activities at Shelby Park. Volunteer activities include invasive species removal, trail work and tree monitoring. To volunteer at Shelby Park, call 3-1-1 or 905-615-4311 from outside Mississauga city limits.
