PINE

Quick Facts

Latin Name
Pinus

Height
up to 20m

Leaf Bloom Time
Spring-Summer: April-June

Leaf Drop Time
Fall: September-November

Pine trees, with around 95 species, are characterized by their evergreen needles that are bundled at the tips of the shoots. There are "soft" pines (bundles of 5, smooth twigs) or "hard" pines (bundles of 2-3, hard twigs). Pines host both pollen and seed cones and are often used for Christmas trees.

Flower/Fruit

Yellow/orange/red catkin-like pollen cones hang downward and drop in late Spring. Brown seed cones grow near the upper crown in numerous, woody scales. Prune new growth in June to produce a bushier plant.

Environment

Full sun or partial shade is ideal. Moist, sandy and well-drained soil is best for growth but prospers in most conditions.
