Having upwards of 600 species, 11 types of oak trees are common in Canada and are generally split between 2 groups: those that have rounded lobes or large teeth. The firm leaves alternate and often cluster at the end of the twig have a prominent vein down the centre. Varying in colour in both spring and fall seasons, the dead leaves often remain on the tree through winter.
Flower/Fruit
- Small pollen flowers grow with the foliage in many drooping catkins (hairy stems).
- Acorns grow copiously and are small one-seeded nuts that have a leathery shell enclosed by a scaly cap.
Environment
Full sun for most of the day is ideal. Moist, sandy and well-drained soil is best for growth.
